Oliwa Travel was born out of a desire to offer a new type of African holiday experience. Think holidays in Africa and what comes to mind for so many people — safaris, waterfalls, Mount Kilimanjaro, even ‘voluntourism’. Who has seen a line of people waiting to board a plane to Kenya or South Africa, dressed like they're straight out of the film Jumanji? Why are package trips more often about 'volunteering' rather than getting to see what an African city is really like? The savannah is great, but surely there are bars, clubs, restaurants, and spas too.
The narrative around Africa for outsiders is shifting. Look at what has happened in recent years. Burna Boy has sold out stadiums in the UK and US and became the first Nigerian to headline New York's iconic Madison Square Garden. Ayra Starr, Asake, Tyla, Davido, Wizkid, and Rema have all dominated charts worldwide. Events and festivals are tapping into this popularity. Bars and clubs in cities from London to Los Angeles now routinely hold Afrobeats and Amapiano nights, while DLT Malta has become one of the most anticipated fixtures in the European festival calendar.
Away from music and partying, African fashion is booming. Catwalks at the 'big four' fashion weeks — Paris, Milan, New York, and London — are increasingly home to African designs, with brands such as South Africa's MaXhosa Africa endorsed by Beyoncé and featured in Vogue. We’ve also seen Sierra Leone’s Labrum collaborate with Adidas to design Arsenal’s iconic 2024/25 away kit.
